Christianity and Mormonism (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or LDS) both talk about Jesus, God, and salvation, but they have very different beliefs about who God is, who Jesus is, and how people are saved. While Mormons consider themselves Christians, historic Christianity and Mormonism have key differences that cannot be ignored.

1. Who is God?

Christianity teaches that there is one eternal God who has always existed. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and unchanging.

The Bible teaches that God is one being in three persons—Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

Mormonism teaches that God was once a man who became God through progression. They believe that God has a physical body and that faithful Mormons can also become gods one day. According to Mormon teaching, there are many gods in existence, but only one rules over this world.

2. Who is Jesus?

Christianity teaches that Jesus is fully God and has always existed. He is the second person of the Trinity, and He became human to die for our sins and rise again.

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Mormonism teaches that Jesus was created and is the spirit brother of Lucifer (Satan). They believe Jesus became a god by following Mormon teachings. This contradicts the Bible, which teaches that Jesus is not a created being but has existed eternally as God.

3. How is Salvation Achieved?

Christianity teaches that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus alone.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works.”

Jesus’ death on the cross completely paid for our sins, and no works can add to what He has already done.

Mormonism teaches that salvation requires faith in Jesus PLUS good works and obedience to LDS teachings. They believe in different levels of Heaven, and only those who follow Mormon ordinances (such as baptism in their temples) can reach the highest level and become gods.

4. What is the Holy Book?

Christians believe the Bible is the complete, inspired Word of God and the final authority for faith and life (2 Timothy 3:16).

Mormons believe in four scriptures:
1️⃣ The Bible (but they believe it was corrupted over time)
2️⃣ The Book of Mormon (claimed to be “another testament of Jesus Christ”)
3️⃣ The Doctrine and Covenants
4️⃣ The Pearl of Great Price

Mormons trust the teachings of their prophet Joseph Smith, who claimed to restore the “true church” in the 1800s. However, Galatians 1:8 warns, “Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse.”

5. What Happens After Death?

Christianity teaches that there are two eternal destinations—Heaven or Hell. Those who trust in Jesus will spend eternity with God in Heaven, while those who reject Him will be separated from God forever (John 3:16, Matthew 25:46).

Mormonism teaches that there are three levels of Heaven, and almost everyone goes to one of them. Only the most faithful Mormons reach the highest level (Celestial Kingdom), where they can become gods and rule their own worlds.

Final Thought

While both Christianity and Mormonism mention Jesus and salvation, they teach two completely different messages. The Bible teaches that God is eternal, Jesus is fully God, and salvation is by grace alone, while Mormonism teaches that God was once a man, Jesus was created, and salvation requires works.

The most important question is:

Who is Jesus? The Bible says He is the eternal Son of God, the only way to salvation. Will you trust in the real Jesus of the Bible? 🙌✨
